How to remove a password from your own PDF
Last updated: 9 October 2026
Banks and employers often send statements and payslips with a password. If you keep them for your own records, an unlocked copy saves typing the password every time.
Ready? Open the free Unlock PDF tool.
Open Unlock PDFOnly unlock files you own or are authorized to access. You need to know the current password — this is not a password-cracking tool.
Step by step
- Open Unlock PDF and select the protected PDF.
- Type the current password. (Leave it blank if the file only has printing or copying restrictions and opens without a password.)
- Choose output quality: Standard (150 DPI) for normal use, or High (220 DPI) for small print and fine detail.
- Click Unlock PDF and download the unlocked copy.
What changes in the unlocked file
The new PDF is rebuilt page by page as high-resolution images, so it opens in any reader without a password. The trade-off is that text is no longer selectable. If you need the text, run the unlocked copy through OCR PDF.
Keep your records safe
An unlocked statement is readable by anyone who gets the file. Keep it in a private folder, or add your own password again with Protect PDF before sharing.
Your file never leaves your device.
