How to convert a PDF table or bank statement to Excel

Last updated: 18 October 2026

Retyping figures from a PDF into a spreadsheet is slow and error-prone. Converting the PDF to Excel gets the numbers into rows and columns so you can sort, total and analyse them — and a few minutes of tidying gives a clean table.

What converts well

PDFs created by software — bank and card statements, invoices, price lists, exported reports — contain real text, and convert best. Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages and contain no text to extract until you run OCR PDF on them. To check, try selecting a number in the PDF; if you can highlight it, it will convert.

Step by step

  1. Open PDF to Excel and select the PDF.
  2. Click Convert to Excel. Each page of the PDF becomes its own sheet, with text placed into rows and columns according to its position on the page.
  3. Click Download XLSX and open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc.

Tidying the result

Because the tool reads where text sits on the page, most tables come out in the right columns. Spend a few minutes on these checks:

  • Combine pages. A five-page statement becomes five sheets. Copy the rows into one sheet, then delete repeated header rows.
  • Fix wrapped descriptions. Long transaction descriptions that ran onto two lines in the PDF may appear as two rows. Merge them back.
  • Check number formats. Make sure amounts are numbers, not text — they should align right and add up with SUM. Watch for thousand separators and decimal commas used in some countries.
  • Separate debit and credit. Some statements show both in one column with “DR” or “CR”. A simple formula or Find & Replace sorts this out.

Converting only part of a document

If you only need the table on page 12 of a long report, save that page first with Extract Pages, then convert it. You will get one clean sheet instead of dozens.

Password-protected statements

Many banks protect statements with a password such as your date of birth. Remove it first with Unlock PDF (only for your own documents), then run OCR on the unlocked copy before converting, because the unlocked file is rebuilt from page images.

Going the other way

To turn a finished spreadsheet into a document anyone can open, use Excel to PDF.

Common questions

Why is my workbook empty? The PDF is probably a scan. Run OCR PDF first.

Are my financial documents uploaded? No. Extraction happens entirely in your browser.

Should I double-check the numbers? Yes. Always compare totals against the original before relying on converted data.

Your file never leaves your device.
