How to rotate PDF pages and save the change permanently
Last updated: 18 October 2026
Scanned a landscape table sideways, or got a document with one page upside down? Rotating the view in your PDF reader only fixes it on your screen, and the next person still sees it wrong. Here is how to save the rotation into the file itself.
Ready? Open the free Rotate PDF tool.
Open Rotate PDFView rotation vs. saved rotation
Most PDF readers and browsers have a rotate button, but it usually changes only your current view. Close the file, or send it to someone else, and the page is sideways again. To fix it for everyone, the new orientation has to be written into the PDF. That is what a rotate tool does.
Step by step
- Open Rotate PDF and select your file.
- If the whole document is wrong, use Rotate every page with ↺ Left or ↻ Right.
- If only some pages are wrong, rotate them individually using the page thumbnails below.
- Click Rotate PDF, then Download PDF.
Which direction?
Each click turns a page by 90 degrees. If the top of the text points to the left, rotate right (clockwise). If it points to the right, rotate left. For an upside-down page, click twice in either direction for 180 degrees. The thumbnails update so you can check before saving.
Mixed portrait and landscape documents
Reports often mix portrait text pages with landscape tables or charts. Those landscape pages are meant to be wide — don't force them into portrait. Rotate them only if the content itself is sideways on the screen, so that a reader never has to tilt their head.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Rotation changes only how a page is displayed; the text, images and fonts on it are untouched and not re-compressed. Text stays searchable and links keep working.
Fix other problems at the same time
- Pages in the wrong order or blank pages to remove? Organize PDF lets you drag, delete and reorder in one place.
- Dark borders around scanned pages? Trim them with Crop PDF after rotating.
- Scanning with a phone? Scan to PDF lets you build the document from correctly oriented photos.
Prevent sideways scans
When scanning on a flatbed, place landscape pages the same way as portrait pages and rotate afterwards — mixing directions on the glass is the usual cause of jumbled orientation. With document feeders, check that the scanner's automatic rotation setting is switched on.
Common questions
Can I rotate just one page? Yes — use the individual page controls instead of “Rotate every page”.
Will the rotation stay when I email the file? Yes. It is saved in the PDF, so it opens correctly on every device.
Is my file uploaded? No. Rotation happens in your browser.
Your file never leaves your device.
